Groups and one-to-one courses

A course is taught in a group, which several people take together, or as a one-to-one course, for just one person. Both have their classes, their attendance and their homework, and both are finished at the end.

  1. In Groups, select New group. You can also open one from a course in the catalog.

  2. Under Format, choose A group.

  3. Choose the Course and its Teachers: any active member of the church, up to 10. They take attendance in the classes.

  4. If you like, enroll its Students now. You can also do it later.

  5. Under The group, fill in its Group name (for example, “Tuesday evenings”), the Capacity, the Time zone of the classes, whether it Takes requests and the Attendance to pass, which is the course’s unless this group asks for a different one.

  6. Select Create group.

When it opens, the group copies the course’s syllabus: one class per lesson, still without a date. Changing the course’s syllabus later doesn’t touch open groups.

With a Capacity, anyone who enrolls in a full group goes on the waitlist, and each place that opens up goes to the next person, in order. Without a capacity, the group takes up to 1,000 students.

The New group panel, with the A group format chosen, the course, its teachers, its students and the group's details

To give a course to someone in particular without forming a group of one, in New group choose One person. You can also select Give to one person in the course, or Give a course in the Courses tab of their record. You choose the course, who gives it and the Student, and select Give the course.

It’s taught just like a group, but it’s named after its student: in the lists it shows as One-to-one course. Its only place belongs to that person from the start, so nobody else joins and it takes no requests. If the person leaves the course, because they’re withdrawn or because their record is archived or becomes inactive, the course is cancelled along with the classes still to come.

The classes copied from the syllabus start without a date. Schedule classes dates them all together with a weekly timetable:

  1. On the group’s page, select Schedule classes.

  2. Choose the Days and, under From, the day it starts.

  3. Set the time. With Same time every day, one for all of them; without that option, one for each day, for example Tuesday at 7:00 PM and Saturday at 10:00 AM.

  4. If you like, choose the Place.

  5. Check How they land: week by week, where each class falls, among the ones that already had a date, which don’t change.

  6. Select Schedule, which says how many classes get a date.

In How they land you can tap a class to change its day, its times or its place by hand without moving the others: it’s marked as Changed, and Back to the weekly times puts it back in its slot. If there’s no class on one of the timetable’s days, for example a public holiday, tick No class that day: that class and the ones after it move to the next day of the timetable, and Undo reverts it.

A class can also be dated on its own, from its panel. New › New class adds a class of your own, such as a review, on top of the syllabus ones. A cancelled class doesn’t count toward anyone’s attendance.

Enroll, on the group’s page, adds several people at once, in the order you choose. It’s all or nothing: if someone can’t join, because they teach in the group, already have a place in the course, aren’t an active member or still have to pass what the course asks for first, nobody is enrolled and you’re told who and why. When the capacity is full, the people who don’t fit go on the waitlist.

To take someone out, open their place and select Withdraw: they leave the group or the waitlist, their marks are kept and their place goes to the next person on the waitlist.

With Takes requests, the group appears in Available for members, who ask for their place from the app. The group’s teachers and whoever manages the groups answer them in Requests, both in the Courses tab and in the group’s: Approve gives the person the place, or puts them on the waitlist if the group is full, and Decline turns the request down.

A group’s page is titled with its course and its name. Below the title, a line gives its phase (Not started, In progress, To finish, Finished or Cancelled), who teaches it, what it asks for to pass counted in classes and whether it takes requests.

  • Next step: the one thing to do now, for whoever can do it: finish the group, take the oldest attendance nobody took, today’s class, schedule the undated classes, enroll or answer requests. If nothing is waiting, it shows the next class, and below, under Then, what comes after.
  • On the way to passing: how the students are doing against the group’s rule, in three bands. Doing well: those who can miss 2 classes or more and still pass; Little room left: those who can miss one more at most, or none; and Need to recover classes: those who won’t make it even if they come to all of them.
  • The syllabus, class by class: one stop per class, with its status. Tapping one shows when it is, who came or its homework, and what needs doing with it.

The tabs are Classes, week by week, with the undated ones at the end; Students; Homework and Requests. At the top, on all of them, Settings opens the group’s panel, with its details and its teachers; Enroll adds students, and New adds a class or homework.

In a one-to-one course, next to the next step you see the student’s attendance, with their percentage against the rule, and the tab is called Student.

Cancel group, in its panel, cancels the classes still to come, and the students leave the group; its history is kept and it can’t be undone. A group can only be deleted if nobody was ever in it.

Students sorts them by how they’re doing, with a dot for each class given: Came, Missed, No attendance yet or Recovered in a follow-up. Whoever teaches the group has Follow up at hand, and Recover a class, which opens the follow-up with the missed class already chosen. The filter also has Waiting, Results, Withdrawn and declined and All, and the search finds anyone.

A group's Students tab, with the students sorted by how they are doing and a dot for each class given

When all the classes have been given, the group is To finish:

  1. Select Finish group.

  2. Review each student: the classes they had, how many they attended, their percentage against the rule and their homework. Their result comes proposed from their attendance: Passed or Did not pass.

  3. Change the ones that need it: they’re marked as changed.

  4. Select Finish with, followed by how many students passed.

Whoever passes has the course passed on their record, with the date of the last class, and it counts for the courses and rungs that ask for it. A result can be corrected later from each student’s place. When the group is finished, unanswered requests and the waitlist leave the group. Homework is only for information: it never decides a result.

Finishing a group doesn’t close the course: it stays in the catalog and can open other groups.
